What is otoplasty?

Otoplasty (ear pinning) reshapes the cartilage of the ear so that it sits closer to the head or has a more balanced shape. Most people who have it have ears that stick out because a natural fold in the cartilage hasn't formed fully, or because the bowl of the ear is deep.

Otoplasty can correct:

ears that stick out (prominent ears)

ears that are different from each other

ears with an unusual fold or shape

the result of a previous ear operation

The aim is ears that look natural from every angle, not ears that are pinned flat against the head.

Is otoplasty right for you?

Otoplasty may suit you if:

your ears stick out more than you'd like, or are noticeably different from each other

you have felt self-conscious about them, or keep your hair long to cover them

you are in good general health and have realistic expectations

There's no upper age limit: adults of any age can have otoplasty.

Otoplasty for children

The ear reaches most of its adult size by around five or six years of age, so otoplasty can be done from then on.

For children, we follow a careful approach:

The child's own wish matters. We recommend surgery when the child is old enough to understand it and wants it, not only because a parent does.

Parental consent is required for every patient under 18.

General anaesthetic is used for children, so they sleep through the operation.

A parent stays with the child throughout the hospital stay and recovery.

How the operation is done

Anaesthesia: usually local anaesthetic with sedation for adults; general anaesthetic for children.

Duration: about 1 to 2 hours, for one or both ears.

Incision: in the crease behind the ear, where the scar is hidden.

Technique: the cartilage is reshaped and held in its new position with permanent internal stitches. In some cases a little cartilage or skin is removed.

Afterwards: a padded bandage protects the ears for the first days, followed by a soft headband.

Otoplasty alongside other procedures

For adults, otoplasty is often combined with another facial procedure, so you have one anaesthetic, one trip and one recovery. The ears frame the face, so correcting them can make other changes look more balanced.

With rhinoplasty: the nose and the ears are both judged in profile and from the front. Treating them together is a common choice for people who want an overall balanced face.

With a facelift or mini facelift: the facelift incisions already run around the ear. If the ears stick out, correcting them during the same operation completes the result.

With buccal fat removal or jawline filler: for people who want to refine several features of the face in one visit. Filler is usually done once swelling has settled.

Combining procedures makes the operation longer, and your plan follows the timeline of the larger procedure. For children, we recommend treating the ears on their own.

Recovery: what to expect

Days 1–3: the ears feel sore, swollen and tight under the bandage.

Week 1: the bandage is replaced by a soft headband; bruising fades.

Weeks 1–2: most adults return to work and most children to school.

Weeks 3–6: wear the headband at night to protect the ears while you sleep. Avoid contact sports.

Months 2–3: remaining swelling settles and the final shape is visible.

Risks you should know about

The ears partly moving back: some return towards their old position can happen, usually in the first months. A small touch-up may occasionally be needed.

Asymmetry: the two ears are never exactly the same, before or after surgery.

Over-correction: ears pinned too flat can look unnatural. Careful planning aims for a natural position.

Bleeding or infection under the bandage: uncommon. Tell us straight away if you have severe pain in one ear.

Stitch problems: an internal stitch can occasionally be felt through the skin and need removing.

Scarring: the scar behind the ear usually heals well, but some people form thickened scars.

Your surgeon will go through the risks with you before you decide.

Once you're back home

You leave with a written discharge summary in English, which you can share with your GP or family doctor.

You keep WhatsApp access to your coordinator and can send photos at any time.

How long do the results last?

For most people, the new position of the ears is long-lasting. A small amount of movement can happen in the first months while the cartilage settles, which is why wearing the headband as advised is important.

Will people see a scar?

The scar sits in the crease behind the ear, so it is hidden from the front and usually hard to see from behind.

Is it painful?

The ears are sore for the first few days. This is usually well controlled with painkillers.

When can my child go back to school?

Usually after about one to two weeks, wearing the headband if advised. Contact sports should wait for around six weeks.

Can both ears be done at the same time?

Yes. Most people have both ears treated in the same operation.

Can I fly after otoplasty?

Yes, after your final check, usually on day 7.

Can I combine otoplasty with another procedure?
