Rhinoplasty, often called a nose job, reshapes the nose. It can reduce a hump, refine or lift the tip, narrow the nose, straighten it, or bring it into better balance with the rest of the face.
The nose also has a job to do: it’s how you breathe. If the septum (the wall inside the nose) is bent, it can be straightened in the same operation. This is called septorhinoplasty.
Your rhinoplasty is planned and performed by a specialist in Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) and Head and Neck Surgery. That means the inside of your nose is assessed as carefully as the outside.
Changing the shape of the nose without taking breathing into account can make breathing worse. Planning both together helps avoid this, and you only need one operation and one recovery.

We prefer closed rhinoplasty whenever it suits your nose. All the work is done through small incisions inside the nostrils, so there are no cuts on the outside of your nose.

Closed rhinoplasty isn’t right for every nose. Your surgeon may recommend the open approach if your tip needs to be rebuilt, large grafts are needed, or you’ve had nose surgery before. If so, you’ll be told in your consultation, with the reason why, before anything is booked.
If you’re happy with the bridge of your nose and only want to change the tip, you may not need a full rhinoplasty. Tip rhinoplasty works only on the cartilage at the end of the nose. The bones aren’t touched.
Your surgeon will look at your photos and tell you whether a tip rhinoplasty is enough, or whether the rest of your nose needs to be shaped too for a balanced result.

The new shape of your nose is long-lasting. Your nose will still age with the rest of your face, and an injury can change it. The final result can take a year or more to appear, so it’s best to judge it only after that time.
Will it hurt?
Most people describe the first days as uncomfortable rather than painful. The blocked feeling is usually the hardest part, and you’ll have pain relief.
Will I have packing in my nose?
Many patients have soft silicone splints instead of traditional packing. They are usually removed in the first days.
Can rhinoplasty fix my breathing?
If your breathing problem is caused by the structure of your nose, such as a deviated septum, it can often be improved in the same operation. Your surgeon assesses this before surgery.
Will people know I’ve had surgery?
The aim is a nose that suits your face and looks natural. With closed rhinoplasty there is no visible scar.
Why do you prefer closed rhinoplasty?
It leaves no visible scar, keeps the skin of the nose attached to the structure underneath, and often means less swelling at the tip. Most first-time rhinoplasties can be done this way. If your nose needs the open approach, your surgeon will explain why.
Can my tip be changed with closed rhinoplasty?
Yes. The tip can be refined, lifted or slimmed through the nostrils. Open rhinoplasty is usually only needed if the tip has to be rebuilt.
Can I see what my new nose will look like before surgery?
Computer simulations can be misleading, because they can’t show how your skin will drape over the new shape. Thick skin, for example, softens fine detail. Instead, your surgeon talks through your photos with you, shows examples of similar noses, and tells you honestly what is realistic for your face and skin.
Can I have a nose like someone in a photo?
Photos are a helpful way to show what you like, such as a straighter bridge or a more lifted tip. But a nose that suits one face may not suit another. The aim is a nose that fits your features, not a copy.
Only the tip of my nose bothers me. Do I need full rhinoplasty?
Not always. A tip rhinoplasty changes only the cartilage at the end of the nose, with a shorter operation and usually little bruising.
When can I fly home?
Usually on day 7, after your splint is removed and your surgeon has checked your nose.
When can I wear glasses?
You should avoid resting glasses on your nose for about four to six weeks. Your surgeon will advise you.
Can someone come with me?
Yes, and we recommend it. Your companion can stay with you at the hotel.
