Zirconium Crowns in Turkey

A zirconium crown is a metal-free cap that covers the whole of a tooth. It is the right treatment for a tooth that has been weakened – by a large filling, root canal treatment, a fracture or heavy wear – and needs protecting. It is usually not the right treatment for a healthy front tooth that you simply want whiter or straighter; for that, a veneer or whitening keeps far more of your natural tooth.

When a zirconium crown is the right choice

A tooth with a large filling that covers much of the tooth

A tooth that has had root canal treatment, particularly a back tooth

A cracked or fractured tooth

Teeth badly worn by grinding or acid erosion

Old metal or metal-ceramic crowns that show a grey line at the gum

Bridges to replace a missing tooth, and crowns on dental implants

Deep discolouration that whitening and veneers cannot cover

If your teeth are healthy and you mainly want a change of colour or shape, we will usually recommend veneers, E-max or whitening instead.

How much of the tooth is removed?

We want you to know this before you decide. To make room for a crown, the tooth is reduced on all sides – front, back, sides and biting surface – by roughly one to two millimetres, depending on the material and the tooth. That is considerably more than for a veneer. Once a tooth is prepared for a crown, it will always need one.

This is why we only recommend crowns where the tooth already needs that protection. On a weakened tooth, a crown can save it from breaking; on a healthy tooth, it removes structure you do not need to lose.

Types of zirconia

For front teeth, E-max is sometimes the better choice because it lets more light through. Many patients have zirconia at the back and E-max or veneers at the front; your plan will explain which suits each tooth.

Type Strengths Typical use
Monolithic (high-strength) zirconia Very strong, resists chipping Back teeth, people who grind, bridges, implants
Multilayer (aesthetic) zirconia More translucent, shade graded from neck to edge Front and visible teeth
Zirconia with layered porcelain Most lifelike surface Front teeth where appearance matters most; slightly higher chipping risk

Before you travel

Send us:

a panoramic X-ray taken in the last six months

clear photos of your teeth and smile

details of any root canal treatment, crowns or implants you already have

We will tell you which teeth are likely to need crowns, which might not, and whether anything needs treating first.

Your treatment, day by day

Day 1 – Examination and preparation. Examination, X-rays and a digital scan. We check that each tooth is healthy enough for a crown and treat any decay. Teeth are then prepared under local anaesthetic, and you leave with temporary crowns.

Days 2–4 – Laboratory. Your crowns are designed digitally and milled from zirconia, then stained or layered to match your other teeth.

Day 4 or 5 – Try-in. We check the fit, bite and shade in your mouth. If anything needs changing, it goes back to the laboratory.

Day 5–7 – Fitting. Crowns are cemented, your bite is adjusted and you receive aftercare instructions and a written record of the materials used.

If you need root canal treatment, gum treatment or extractions first, your stay may be longer, or we may suggest two visits.

Your dentist

Your treatment is planned and carried out by a specialist in Prosthodontics – the dental speciality focused on crowns, veneers, bridges and implant restorations. You can find your dentist’s profile, qualifications and experience on the Our Doctors page.

What is included

Examination, X-rays and digital scan

Treatment as set out in your written plan

Temporary crowns during your stay

Try-in before final fitting

Airport and clinic transfers

Hotel accommodation for the agreed number of nights

An English-speaking patient coordinator

Aftercare by WhatsApp after you return home

How it feels afterwards

The preparation is done under local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Afterwards:

Teeth can be sensitive to hot and cold for a few days, sometimes a few weeks.

Gums around the crowns may be tender for several days.

Your bite may feel different at first. If it still feels high after a few days, tell us: a small adjustment usually solves it.

Soft foods are easiest for the first day or two.

Risks and limitations

Nerve problems – preparing a tooth for a crown can irritate the nerve. Some teeth later need root canal treatment, sometimes months or years afterwards.

Sensitivity – usually temporary.

Decay at the edge – the crown itself cannot decay, but the tooth underneath can, especially where it meets the gum.

Gum recession – over time the gum can move back and show the edge of the crown.

Chipping or fracture – uncommon with monolithic zirconia, more likely with layered porcelain or heavy grinding.

Wear on opposing teeth – a rough zirconia surface can wear the teeth it bites against; crowns are polished to reduce this.

Replacement – crowns last many years with good care, but not forever. Expect to replace them at some point.

Once you’re back home

Your coordinator stays in touch by WhatsApp. Send photos at one week and one month, or whenever something feels wrong.

See your own dentist and hygienist every six months and tell them you have zirconia crowns.

Clean carefully where the crown meets the gum, with floss or interdental brushes.

Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth.

If a crown feels loose, chips or hurts, contact us first. We will tell you whether a local dentist can manage it or whether you need to be seen in Adana.

Your written plan sets out the guarantee terms for your crowns: what is covered, for how long, and what you need to do to keep it valid.

Alongside other treatments

Veneers or E-max on healthy front teeth, with zirconia on the teeth that need crowns, as part of a Hollywood Smile.

Implants – zirconia is often used for crowns and bridges on implants, including All-on-4 and All-on-6.

Whitening before treatment, so crowns can be matched to a lighter natural shade.

Professional cleaning before preparation, so gums are healthy when impressions are taken. See Dental Cleaning.

Do I need crowns, or would veneers do?

If a tooth is healthy, a veneer usually keeps more of it. Crowns are for teeth that need the extra protection. Your plan explains the choice for each tooth.

How long do zirconium crowns last?

Many last for well over a decade with good care, but it depends on your bite, grinding, gum health and how well you clean around them. They will need replacing at some point.

Do they look natural?

Modern multilayer zirconia looks natural on most teeth. For front teeth where translucency matters most, we may suggest E-max.

Does it hurt?

Preparation is done under local anaesthetic. Some sensitivity for a few days afterwards is common.

Can zirconia be used on back teeth?

Yes. It is one of the strongest crown materials and well suited to molars.

Is zirconia safe if I am allergic to metal?

Zirconia is metal-free. If you have a known allergy, tell us so we can check the cement and other materials too.

Can I whiten my crowns later?

No. Crowns keep the shade they are made in, so if you want your natural teeth lighter, we whiten them before your crowns are made.

Can my own dentist look after them?

Yes. Any dentist can check and clean zirconia crowns. We give you a written record of the materials used.

Can I fly straight after treatment?

Yes.
