If your teeth are healthy and well shaped but darker than you would like, whitening may be all you need – no veneers, no crowns, nothing removed from your teeth. Whitening is also the first step for many patients having veneers or crowns: it sets a lighter natural shade, so the porcelain can be matched to it.

A whitening gel containing hydrogen peroxide is applied to the teeth after the gums and lips are protected. The gel breaks down stain molecules inside the enamel. It is usually applied two or three times in one appointment, and your shade is checked before and after. Nothing is drilled or removed.
We do not promise a set number of shades, because results vary from person to person. What makes the difference:
If whitening is unlikely to give you the result you want, for example because of deep internal staining, we will tell you before you book and talk you through options such as veneers.
Whitening may suit you if your teeth and gums are healthy and you have staining from food, drink, smoking or age.
It may need to wait, or may not be suitable, if:
Porcelain cannot be whitened once it is made. So if you are having veneers or crowns on some teeth, we usually whiten the remaining teeth first, wait for the shade to settle, and then match the porcelain to your new colour. This avoids porcelain that looks too white next to your natural teeth – or natural teeth that look yellow next to new porcelain. Your coordinator plans the timing of your appointments around this.

How white will my teeth get?
It depends on your starting shade and the type of staining. We record your shade before and after, and will tell you honestly what to expect at your check-up.
How long does it last?
It varies with your habits. Colour gradually returns, more quickly if you drink a lot of coffee, tea or red wine, or smoke. Regular cleaning and occasional top-ups help.
Does whitening damage enamel?
Professional whitening, carried out by a dentist with the gums protected, is considered safe for healthy enamel. Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect.
Does it hurt?
No injections are needed. Some people feel short twinges during or after treatment.
Will it whiten my crowns or veneers?
No. Crowns, veneers and fillings keep their colour.
Is in-clinic whitening better than a home kit?
In-clinic whitening works faster and is supervised by a dentist. Dentist-supplied home kits work more slowly and are useful for top-ups. Over-the-counter products are much weaker.
Can I have whitening if I’m pregnant?
We recommend waiting until after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Is it worth travelling just for whitening?
Usually not on its own, but it fits easily into a visit for other dental or cosmetic treatment.
