Of all the ways to change a smile with porcelain, veneers remove the least natural tooth – which is why, for healthy teeth, they are usually our first recommendation.

Most veneers need a thin layer of enamel to be removed from the front of the tooth – typically well under a millimetre – so the veneer sits in line with your other teeth and does not look bulky. This is far less than for a crown, but it is not nothing, and it cannot be reversed: a prepared tooth will always need a veneer.
Sometimes, for example where teeth are small or there are gaps, a veneer can be added with very little or no preparation. Whether this is possible depends on your teeth; we will tell you honestly at your assessment.
There is no standard number. It depends on which teeth show when you smile and speak, and what you want to change. Some people need two veneers to fix a chipped front tooth; others need more to change the colour of the whole smile. Your plan lists every tooth and what is proposed for it.
We choose the shade with you in natural light, matched to your skin, the whites of your eyes and any teeth that will not have veneers. Porcelain does not whiten, so if you would like your other teeth lighter, we whiten them first and match the veneers to the new shade.

Do veneers damage your teeth?
Most veneers need a thin layer of enamel removed, and this cannot be undone. Done carefully on healthy teeth, the tooth underneath stays strong. This is why we use veneers rather than crowns wherever we can.
Are veneers the same as “Turkey teeth”?
No. The “Turkey teeth” stories in the UK are mostly about healthy teeth cut down for crowns. Veneers keep most of the tooth. Our plan shows which treatment each tooth will have before you agree.
How long do veneers last?
With good care, regular check-ups and a night guard if you grind, porcelain veneers usually last many years. They will need replacing at some point.
Do they stain?
Porcelain resists staining well. The bonding edge and your natural teeth can still pick up stains, so regular cleaning helps.
Does it hurt?
Preparation is usually done under local anaesthetic. Some sensitivity for a few days is common.
Can veneers fix crooked teeth?
Mild unevenness, yes. For crowded or crooked teeth, orthodontics first usually gives a better result and keeps more of your tooth.
