A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) removes loose skin and excess fat from the abdomen and, where needed, repairs the abdominal muscles. It is designed for changes that diet and exercise can't fix: skin that has been stretched by pregnancy or weight loss, and muscles that have separated.
A tummy tuck is not a weight loss method. It works best when you are already at, or close to, a stable weight.
During pregnancy, and sometimes after weight gain, the two vertical muscles of the abdomen move apart. The tissue between them stretches and often doesn't recover. Core exercise strengthens the muscles but can't close the gap, because the stretched tissue is the problem.
In a tummy tuck, the edges of the muscles are stitched back together. This flattens the abdomen from the inside and, for some people, helps with lower back discomfort.
After pregnancy or major weight loss, a full tummy tuck is often needed. Where loose skin continues around the sides, an extended tummy tuck treats the flanks too. Your surgeon will recommend the right option after seeing your photos.

Every tummy tuck leaves a scar. The aim is to place it well: low, along the underwear or bikini line, so it can be hidden by most underwear and swimwear. The scar is firm and pink at first and softens and fades over about a year. How it heals depends partly on your skin.

Will I have a drain?
Small drains are sometimes used for the first few days to remove fluid. They are removed before you fly home.
How long do I wear the compression garment?
Usually for about six weeks. Your surgeon will confirm your plan.
Can someone come with me?
