Bow Leg Treatment in Turkey (Genu Varum Correction). Straighten Your Legs. Restore Balance. Walk with Confidence.
Bow legs, also known as genu varum, is a condition in which the legs curve outward at the knees while the ankles remain close together — creating a noticeable gap between the knees when standing.
Although commonly seen in children and often self-correcting, in adults it can result in:
🔸 Aesthetic concerns
🔸 Joint pain and early arthritis
🔸 Gait disturbances and imbalance
🔸 Reduced self-confidence
Bow legs can be caused by:
In adults, untreated bow legs often lead to knee joint degeneration and posture problems over time.
Treatment varies depending on age, severity, cause, and patient goals. At Medicape, we offer advanced correction techniques, including:
The most common surgical treatment for adult bow legs. A small wedge of bone is removed or inserted from the upper tibia to realign the leg axis and reduce pressure on the inner knee joint.
✅ Minimally invasive techniques available
✅ Preserves the natural knee joint
✅ Common in younger, active adults with early arthritis
For more complex or severe deformities. A circular external frame (Ilizarov or Taylor Spatial Frame) is applied to gradually adjust alignment over weeks.
✅ Highly precise, adjustable correction
✅ Used for multi-plane deformities or leg length differences
✅ Requires compliance and longer recovery time
Bone is surgically cut and immediately realigned with internal hardware, such as plates and screws.
✅ Faster recovery compared to external frames
✅ Preferred in moderate, single-plane bowing
✔ Adults with persistent bowing that affects function or appearance
✔ Patients experiencing knee pain, joint wear, or balance issues
✔ Individuals seeking improved aesthetics and posture
✔ Those in good overall health and with realistic expectations
🕒 Hospital stay: 2–3 days depending on technique
🩺 First 2 weeks: Limited weight-bearing with crutches or walker
🕒 Weeks 3–6: Gradual increase in mobility and physical therapy
🕒 3–6 months: Full return to walking, sports, and lifestyle
Patients are guided closely through physical therapy and follow-up imaging to ensure proper healing and alignment.
✅ Straighter, more symmetrical legs
✅ Reduced knee joint pressure and risk of arthritis
✅ Improved body balance and walking mechanics
✅ Stronger self-image and confidence
✅ Permanent, functional correction

In children, mild bowing of the legs is common and usually straightens on its own by the age of three. In adults, bow legs (genu varum) do not correct themselves. The most common causes in adults are a bowing that persisted from childhood, untreated or late-treated rickets, Blount's disease, a fracture that healed at an angle, or gradual wearing of the inner part of the knee joint (medial compartment osteoarthritis).
Treatment is considered when the bowing causes knee pain, uneven wear of the joint, difficulty walking long distances, or when the appearance of the legs affects the patient's confidence. Because the load on a bowed knee is concentrated on its inner side, correcting the alignment in adulthood also protects the joint from further damage.
In adults, braces, insoles, stretching and strengthening exercises do not change the alignment of the bone. They can reduce pain and improve how the knee feels day to day, and they are useful preparation before surgery, but they do not straighten the leg. Once growth has finished, a permanent change in alignment requires an osteotomy, in which the bone is cut and repositioned. This is why adult patients who have tried exercise programmes for years without a visible change are usually advised to consider surgical correction.
| Stage | What happens |
| Online consultation | Standing full-length leg X-rays are reviewed; the degree of deformity is measured and the correction method is planned |
| Arrival and surgery | Pre-operative tests on arrival, surgery the following day under general anaesthesia |
| Hospital stay | Typically 2 to 3 nights |
| Walking | Walking with crutches from the first days; partial weight-bearing for about 6 weeks, depending on the fixation method |
| Stay in Turkey | Around 10 to 14 days for wound checks and first physiotherapy sessions |
| Bone healing | Around 3 months; full return to sport at 6 months or later |
Both legs can be corrected in the same session or in two stages a few months apart. The surgeon decides based on the degree of deformity, your general health and how much support you have at home during recovery. Follow-up X-rays after you return home are reviewed remotely by the same surgical team.

Are the results of bow leg treatment permanent?
Treatment results are generally long-lasting. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and following medical guidance supports long-term outcomes.
Is bow leg treatment safe?
When performed by experienced specialists in accredited medical facilities, bow leg treatment is considered safe. Thorough evaluation and proper follow-up care reduce potential risks.

How can I book a bow leg treatment consultation with Medicape Health?
You can contact Medicape Health to schedule a personalized consultation, where your leg structure and concerns are evaluated and an individualized bow leg treatment plan is created.
Can bow legs be corrected in adults?
Yes. Adult bow legs are corrected with an osteotomy, in which the tibia is cut and repositioned to restore straight alignment. Non-surgical methods do not change bone alignment once growth has finished.
Is there an age limit for bow leg surgery?
There is no strict upper age limit. The decision depends on bone quality, joint condition and general health rather than age alone. Patients from their late teens into their sixties are treated.
Can both legs be operated on at the same time?
Yes, both legs can be corrected in one session. Some surgeons prefer two stages a few months apart for severe deformities or when the patient has limited support at home.
How long before I can walk normally after bow leg surgery?
Walking with crutches begins within the first few days. Most patients walk without support after about six weeks and return to normal daily activity by three months; sport is resumed at six months or later.
Does bow leg correction help knee pain?
Usually yes. Bowing concentrates the load on the inner side of the knee; correcting the alignment spreads the load evenly and reduces pain, and it slows further wear of the joint.
