We have answered the questions that patients are most curious about in gynecomastia surgery for you. You can always contact us for all your other questions.
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of male breast tissue caused by hormonal imbalance, medications, medical conditions, or lifestyle factors. It is a benign condition and not related to male breast cancer in most cases.
Gynecomastia is usually not dangerous. However, if breast enlargement is sudden, painful, or accompanied by nipple discharge or hard lumps, medical evaluation is recommended.
The most common cause is an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone. Other causes include certain medications, anabolic steroids, obesity, liver or thyroid disorders, and aging.
In adolescents, gynecomastia often resolves naturally within 6–24 months. In adults, especially when glandular tissue has developed, it is less likely to disappear without treatment.
Weight loss can noticeably reduce the chest when the fullness comes mainly from fatty tissue. True gynecomastia is caused by firm glandular tissue behind the nipple, and this tissue does not respond to diet or training. An examination, and sometimes an ultrasound scan, shows which type you have and whether surgery is the appropriate route.
Gynecomastia is usually grouped into a glandular form, a fatty form often called pseudogynecomastia, and a mixed form that combines both. The treatment follows the type: fatty tissue is generally addressed with liposuction, while glandular tissue has to be removed through a small incision, and cases with loose skin may also need skin tightening. Your surgeon determines the type and the degree of sagging during the examination and plans the technique accordingly.
The glandular tissue removed during surgery does not grow back, so recurrence is uncommon. The chest can fill out again after considerable weight gain, and the underlying problem may return with anabolic steroid use, certain medications or an untreated hormonal disorder. Identifying and addressing the cause before surgery, then keeping a stable weight, is the best way to protect the result.
Around five to seven days in Turkey is usually enough for gynecomastia surgery. This covers the pre-operative tests, the procedure, the first dressing change and a check-up before departure, and a compression vest is worn for several weeks afterwards. Desk work is often possible within a few days, while chest and upper-body training is postponed for about six weeks.
